Spotify has announced a major upgrade to how users create playlists.
The company is testing a new Spotify AI playlist tool that uses a person’s entire listening history to build music lists from simple text prompts.
The feature begins testing on December 11 for Premium users in New Zealand. Spotify says this marks a big shift in how people will control their music experience.
AI Playlists Built From Your Full History

The new tool is called Prompted Playlist. It goes beyond Spotify’s earlier AI tools by reading every song a user has played since the day they joined the app.
Users can type short or detailed prompts, and Spotify will instantly build a custom playlist.
Examples include:
- “Songs from my favourite artists from the last five years.”
- “High-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute run, then relaxing songs for cool-down.”
Spotify leaders say this update makes users co-creators of their playlists.
Gustav Söderström, incoming Co-CEO, explained that for the first time, users can guide how the Spotify algorithm “thinks and adapts.”
Key Features
- Uses complete listening history
- Creates playlists from simple or complex text prompts
- Allows daily or weekly playlist refresh
- Gives a short explanation under each song showing why it was recommended
- Available first for Premium users in New Zealand
- Wider rollout expected after testing

Part of Spotify’s Push for Smarter, More Personal Music Tools
Spotify now has 713 million monthly active users, and the company says 90% feel the app is essential to their day.
With strong competition in the music-streaming market, Spotify is focusing on AI to offer deeper personalisation.
The Prompted Playlist feature aims to make listening more flexible and more fun.
Instead of waiting for recommendations, users can tell Spotify exactly what they want and let the AI build the perfect soundtrack for workouts, study sessions, travel, or mood-based moments.
This move signals Spotify’s plan for the future: a platform where listeners don’t just consume music—they design their own experience with the power of artificial intelligence.
